Deuteronomy 17:18-19(NKJV)
Also, it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for
himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levies. Shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes,
Author
- Moses (120 years old)
Date
- About 1400 B.C.
- Just before the death of Moses and Joshua's leading the people into Canaan
Theme
- Remembrance of the Law
- Obedience & Blessings
- Disobedience & Cursing
Purpose
- The title of the book of Deuteronomy comes from the Greek meaning "second law." The Israelites spend forty years wandering in the wilderness. During this time all those who were twenty and above died according to the Word of the Lord in Numbers 14:29 (except for Joshua and Caleb).
- Moses reminds this new generation of Israelites of their history, what God had done for them, and God's laws. The book of Deuteronomy is a reminder of God's faithfulness and a challenge to possess the promise land.
