 The 6th grade reading and writing student:

  •  Locates words in a dictionary, identifies word families, and defines new vocabulary words.
  • Reads and answers thought questions.
  • Uses visual discrimination.
  • Writes expository and descriptive paragraphs, essays, simple and detailed explanations, directions, personal diary entries; cause and effect; fact and opinion; and exposition, description, persuasion, and narration.
  • Identifies figures of speech, sensory detail, and climax and resolution of story.
  • Solves word and logic puzzles.

4th grade Reading and Writing

 The 4th grade Reading and writing student:

  • Uses imagination, deductive reasoning, and comparison and contrast.
  • Learns to draw conclusions and find the main idea of a paragraph.
  • Makes predictions about the end of a story and discerns between “alike” and “different.”
  • Increases dictionary skills, learns about biographies, autobiographies, and libraries.
  • Finds valuable lessons in character-building stories.
  • Writes a letter to a missionary, an invitation, an anecdote, a sketch, and a story ending.

5th Grade Reading and Writing


  The 5th grade reading and writing student:

  •  Adds to his knowledge of short story elements—setting, characters, plot, and order.
  • Learns about the four types of conflict in stories.
  • Discovers personification, alliteration, anagrams, analogies, antonyms, homonyms, homophones, similes, and metaphors.
  • Considers time order and narrative, cause and effect, point of view, comparison and contrast, and the difference between fact and opinion.
  • Distinguishes between topic sentences and supporting sentences and persuasive and descriptive writing.

Literature and Creative writing Resources for 8th grade

  • Literary skills focus on reading comprehension and text analysis. Students should apply their reading comprehension skills to documents.
  • They should be able to recognize the main idea, central theme, and supporting details. Students should have ample practice summarizing, comparing and contrasting, and inferring an author's meaning. Eighth-grade students should also learn to recognize and understand the use of language, such as figurative language, analog, and allusions.
  • Students should begin comparing and two texts that present conflicting information on the same topic. They should be able to identify the cause of the conflicts, such as contradictory or inaccurate facts, or the author's opinion or bias on the subject.
  • Provide eighth graders with ample opportunities practice their composition skills. They should a variety of essays and more complex compositions, including how-to, persuasive, and informational articles; poetry; short stories; and research papers
