The Ascension

The Resurrection

The Empty Tomb
  • Jesus is alive!
  • He is risen!

Appearances Of Jesus After His Resurrection
  • Jesus appears to the women first! (Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James, Salome, Joanna and other women not named)
  • Jesus appeared to Peter
  • Jesus appears to His disciples several times
  • Jesus walks with two believers on the Road to Emmaus (Cleopas; the other believer's name not mentioned)

The Forty Days Before His Ascension (Acts 1:2-8)
  • Jesus gave commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen
  • Jesus presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs
  • Jesus spoke to them of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God
  • Jesus commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the Promise of the Father - to be baptized with the Holy Spirit, to receive power to be His witnesses in the earth.
The Ascension
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. (Acts 1:9-l1)

The Throne of Grace (Hebrews 4, 7, 8, 12)
  • Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God
  • Jesus as our High Priest ever lives to make intercession for us

The Love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:34-35, 37-39)
Nothing can separate us from the love of God- we are more than conquerors!
  • not tribulation
  • not sword
  • nor things present
  • not distress
  • neither death
  • nor things to come
  • not persecution
  • nor life
  • nor height
  • not famine
  • nor angels
  • nor depth
  • not nakedness
  • nor principalities
  • not peril
  • nor any other created thing
  • nor powers
Behold, He is coming with clouds and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, Who is and Who was and Who is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:7-8)

Reviewing Bible Topics through Playing Cards

A Deck of Cards
It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard.

The young soldier knew it was Sunday. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk.
Just then an army sergeant came in and said, "Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?"The soldier replied, "I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord."

The sergeant said, "Looks to me like you're going to play cards." The soldier said, "No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards."

The sergeant asked in disbelief, "How will you do that?" "You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.

The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments.

The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Five is for the five virgins there were ten but only five of them were glorified.

The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.

The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.

The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives - the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth.

The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy. He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him.

The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.

The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.

The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary.

The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings.

When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year.

There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week - 52 weeks in a year.

The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

Each suit has thirteen cards - there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.

Therefore, when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for."

The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, "Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?"

The Shema: (the watchword of Israel's faith)

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you
today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You
shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night,
that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

But be "doers" of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a "doer" of the work, this one
will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:22, 25)

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2Timothy 3:16-17)

Doctrine is what the Word of God says (teaches) on any particular subject.

Reproof exposes error in your thoughts, behavior and deeds that do not line-up with the Word of God.

Correction is often the most difficult step in the "doing" process. You may have acknowledged the error and understand the truth but are reluctant to take the necessary steps to correct you thinking or behavior. The Holy Spirit will empower you to change and walk out the truth that the Word of God
has revealed to you.

Instruction in righteousness will be gained as you spend time studying God's word.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16)

The Natural, Carnal, and Spiritual Man

The Natural, Carnal, and Spiritual Man

The Natural Man
    • The natural man is one who lives without God - who lives his/her life "in the flesh". The "flesh" in this sense means the sinful (lower) nature- the nature which became a part of man after the fall (sin) of Adam and Eve. Now, this sinful nature is passed down to all men.
  • The illustration shows that the door of the spirit (that part of man that relates to God) is closed. the door of the flesh is open. The natural man must be born again - his spirit made alive.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
  • Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
  • Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
  • Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
  • Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
The Carnal Christian
The carnal Christian is one who lives his/her life "according to the flesh" Though the carnal Christian has received Christ and is a partaker of the divine nature of God they have failed to continue to grow spiritually. The carnal Christian follows the dictates of his/her fleshly nature more often than those of his/her spiritual nature.

The illustration shows that the carnal Christian has opened the door of the spirit by receiving Christ, but has not closed the door of the flesh.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.  For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
  • Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:16-17 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
  • Romans 7:15-25   For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
The Spiritual Christian
The Spiritual Christian is one who lives his/her life "in the Spirit" - sold out to Jesus! Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, and their life is totally dependent upon Him.

The illustration shows that the spiritual Christian has closed the door to the flesh. The spiritual Christian lives in the Spirit and walks in the Spirit.

  • Galatians 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
  • Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
  • Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • Romans 6:12-14 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
  • I Corinthians 3:16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
  • Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
  • Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Conscience (part 2)

Conscience

...that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. (Romans 1:19 NAS)
